Capitan Jose Carlos has dedicated countless hours of his time since 2014 at Washington Elementary to teach students about their rich indigenous/ Aztec culture. He leads an after school program where students in grades Kinder thru 5th can stay after school to learn Aztec dancing and percussion.
This is a joint effort on behalf of the Woodburn School District and nonprofit Huitzilopochtli. In our 2023 Dia de los Muertos presentation 41 Washington Elementary students, 5 middle school students, and 10 high school/ community college students participated in sharing the Aztec cultural traditions with the Woodburn community. In December we have a Culture Night planned to invite parents and community members to watch more Danza Azteca and to also have a cultural exchange with the Baile Folkloric group from Nellie Muir Elementary |
